ADDITIONAL COMPETITION

EXTREME FORMS COMPETITION

Competitors may wear a Traditional Taekwondo or Specialty Uniforms.
Competitors only receive one chance to demonstrate their form.

• Because the competitors will be demonstrating free-design forms with extreme moves and/or weapons there are no technique mistake deductions.
• One point deductions include:
– Exceeding the 90 second time limit
– Leaving the competition area to perform a technique or because of balance failure (1 point for each instance)
– Losing control of or unintentionally dropping weapons during the form. Placing the weapon on the ground is allowed but must clearly be intentional to avoid the deduction. (1 point for each instance)
– Starting and stopping the form (except due to music malfunction)
– Reminder: At least two Judges must agree on deductions which are taken from the TOTAL score by the Scorekeeper.

• Tumbling or Tricking moves are allowed for the competition but should be used with caution. Never attempt a move you cannot safely execute! Examples include:
– Forward or backwards rolls
– Cartwheels, handsprings, and round-offs
– Handstands, walkovers, and splits
– Aerial kicks (for instance 360s and 540s)
• School owners, be sure to check with your tournament director if there is a question about whether a specific move is allowed or not.
• Weapons allowed for competition: All traditional martial-arts weapons may be used. All weapons must be blunt or practice weapons to ensure the safety of competitors, judges, and spectators.

• Judges score the overall quality of the form based on:
1) ORIGINALITY: The more unique & exciting the form & use of weapons is, the higher the score
2) EXECUTION: Good technique, snap & power; comparable to what you would expect during a regular forms competition.
3) ENTERTAINMENT: The creativity and appeal to the audience

In the event of a tie, each student receives 1 opportunity to perform their form in a run-off. For two-way ties, both competitors will do their form individually before they are scored. Judges should score 8 or 9 for 1st and 2nd place ties and 7 or 8 for 3rd and 4th place ties. For all ties, the Ring Supervisor should explain the tie-breaker procedures to the competitors and spectators.

TRADITIONAL FREESTYLE FORMS COMPETITION

Competitors are required to wear a full, white Traditional Taekwondo uniform.

Demo Team Rules

DEMONSTRATION TEAM COMPETITION RULES:
Safety Note: Safety is the number one concern for Taekwondo America, demonstration teams, and judges. All demonstration elements (particularly the fight scene and board breaks) should be planned and performed with the safety of competitors and spectators in mind.

Sportsmanship: Like all Taekwondo America competitions, this is a fun event! Demonstration Team members, school owners, team leaders, parents, and supporters are all expected to adhere to the Taekwondo America Courtesy Policy (see below). Everyone should show a positive attitude towards other teams, judges, and tournament directors at all times. This includes being respectful of the judges’ decisions and scores.

Taekwondo America Courtesy Policy: Any competitor, spectators, parent, or judge exhibiting unsportsmanlike conduct or interfering with the positive competitive atmosphere of the demonstration team competition will be asked to leave immediately. Remember and practice the tenets of Taekwondo: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, and Indomitable Spirit.

Competition Fee: $150 per team. Teams must register with the Taekwondo America National Office 30 days prior to the competition date. Teams will have the option to pay an additional fee and have Taekwondo America provide their boards.

Competition Time: Demonstration Team Competition is held following the high rank competition on the Friday during the January National Tournament. The winner of the competition will perform their demonstration on Saturday prior to the afternoon competition.

Competition Order: The returning champion will perform first. A random drawing will be used to determine the order of the remaining teams.

Competition Area: Approximately 10 floor squares by 10 floor squares or about 30 ft by 30 ft. There will also be an additional safety border 5 feet around the competition area to help ensure the safety of all spectators.

Time Requirements: The demonstration should last at least 2 minutes and no more than 6 minutes. Teams are responsible for setting up their demonstration (no more than 2 minutes) and cleaning up afterwards (no more than 1 minute). Penalties for exceeding the time limit are explained below.

Team Requirements:
• Team Members: Each team must have at least 6 members to compete in the Demonstration Team competition. There is no maximum number of team members.
• Team Uniform: All team members should perform in matching or on-theme uniforms, within good taste. Anyone assisting with the demonstration (such as holding boards or organizing props) is considered part of the team and should also be in matching or on-theme uniform.
• Team Name: Each team must choose a name in good taste. Team names can be as simple as “City, State” Taekwondo Team or more creative such as “Team Powerkick”.
Required Elements: These are the elements of the demonstration that the judges will score.
• Forms: Each team must include at least one form in which every team member performs.
• Fight Scene: Please keep safety in mind with all stunts.
• Board Breaking: Teams should be prepared for the performance area to be surrounded by spectators. All board breaks should be performed with safety in mind; speed breaks should aim towards the front (where the judges are seated) or from one far corner to the other. Board holders should always hold with both hands, not just one.

Optional Elements: These items are not required, but can enhance the overall effect of the demonstration. Teams should be prepared to perform without these elements, should technology fail or safety concerns lead Taekwondo America to ask them to remove the element. The performance should not rely on these elements.
• Music: Must be supplied by the demonstration team on a digital device (ipod, mp3 player, etc.). Teams are encouraged to avoid the use of currently popular songs. All music must be clean (no explicit languages or lyrics).
• Weapons: Please keep safety in mind with all weapons elements. Remember that all weapons must be “practice” weapons with no sharp edges or points.
• Props and Special Effects: Please keep safety in mind with all props and effects. Teams should be prepared to perform without these elements if they are deemed unsafe for competitors or the tournament site by Taekwondo America. Judging Criteria and Process: Judges of the Demonstration Team competition 5th degree black belts or higher who have years of judging experience and do not have a

What to Expect from a Tournament

Tournament Competition

Things to Expect:

  1. Tournament rings will be visible and specific
  2. Ring assignments can be found on the TA Event App. See your instructor for the download to add to your smart device.
  3. Arrive at your assigned ring 15-20 minutes early.
  4. We begin with patterns. Competitors will be called one at a time to do their pattern. Competitors may do their previous pattern as long as the new rank was achieved at last testing (i.e. a purple belt who received their rank during the August testing cycle may perform Won-Hyo at the September National Tournament). Scores will be awarded by the 3 judges when competitor is finished. We score on a tenth of a point scale.
  5. If the judges ask for the pattern to be redone the student has the option. The penalty is 1 point overall deducted from score.
  6. The Ring Supervisor will double check scores, update the app, and proceed to one steps/free sparring if there are no ties. Ties will be settled by having the competitors redo their forms (with no penalty) and new scores assigned to “break” the tie. Ties for 1st and 2nd will be awarded 8s and 9s. Ties for 3rd and 4th will be awarded 7s and 8s.
  7. Our sparring brackets are a modified double elimination format. This means that a competitor must lose twice to be fully eliminated from sparring competition. Modified means that a competitor may not “win their way” back into gold medal consideration.
  8. Points are awarded by judges for either the best one-step or for legal contact to target areas during free sparring. Matches are for 1 minute.
  9. In the case of a tie in sparring: points reset to 0 but warnings do not. Each tie break session is 15 seconds and will continue until a clear winner is declared based on points.
  10. Medals are awarded after the ring is complete.
  11. Board Breaking, although done in the taekwondo school, will receive medals at the designated Board Breaking table at the tournament.
